Greece is a place most Europeans speak well of, despite the economic crisis, the reason for that is probably that they have all gone there for a one or two week holiday in summer and had some great memories and expereinces to bring home.
The Greek islands truly are amazing, and since there are over 2000 different islands, there is always enough space for tourists.
Some travel blogs write about how Greece is not what it used to be, but the authors of a travel blog like that either wants to come out looking well-traveled, having been to places before others did, or is very old – meaning he went there before the 60’s when it became a big tourist destination.
Even as early as in the 19th century authors complained about the tourism – so let us just get over ourselves, avoid the biggest traps and enjoy Greece the way it is supposed to be enjoyed.
But which island to pick?
There are so many islands suiting different kinds of people, and it is really up to what you want from your trip that dedcides where to go.
If you want the most beautiful views, Santorini is your destination. If you want some awesome partying, Mykonos is the place to go, and if you want to sample some of the best Greek food, Samos is a good place to visit.
Some islands are great for day trips, like Gavdos which has some of the most amazing beaches, and can be included in a day trip from nearby Crete.
I have been to Crete twice, once when I was a child and then a second time a few years ago.
The more recent time I went I had a great time artying and all that, but it would not be a place I would like to visit again.
We went on an “unspecified” trip because they are cheaper, but it is not something I would really recommend doing, I would suggest creating your own trip instead.
